Pakistan rejects UN Rights chief’s concerns over 27th amendment

Pakistan has expressed “deep concern” over observations made on behalf of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding the recently passed 27th Constitutional Amendment, calling the remarks ungrounded and politically biased.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Foreign Office said that constitutional amendments are the exclusive domain of Pakistan’s elected parliament. “Democracy and democratic methods form the bedrock of civil and political rights and therefore must be respected,” the spokesperson said.

The FO emphasized that the amendment was passed with a two-thirds majority and through procedures clearly outlined in the Constitution.

“We urge the High Commissioner to respect the sovereign decisions of Pakistan’s parliament and avoid commentary that reflects political bias and misinformation,” the statement added.Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law, the Foreign Office expressed regret that the UN rights body’s statement did not reflect Pakistan’s views or the ground realities.

Pakistan said it values its engagement with the Office of the High Commissioner but expects objective and balanced assessments.
