Regional escalation will have ‘serious repercussions’ for international security, peace: Qatari emir

Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said the escalating situation in the region could have “serious repercussions” for international security and peace during a call with US President Donald Trump, according to the Qatar News Agency late Saturday.

The two leaders reviewed regional developments amid continued Iranian attacks targeting Qatar and other states in the region.

The emir stressed that the escalation would have “dangerous consequences” for international security and peace, underscoring the importance of containing the crisis and intensifying diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

He said Qatar “would take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty, security and national interests in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.”

Both sides also emphasized the need for joint efforts to preserve regional and international stability and support political pathways to ease tensions and prevent further escalation in the region.

Iran began launching missiles and drones on Feb. 28 toward Israel and Gulf countries that host US military assets. Some of the strikes have caused casualties and damage to civilian sites, including ports and residential buildings.

Tehran said the attacks are in response to a US-Israeli military campaign against Iran that has killed hundreds, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and senior military officials.
