ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday held separate meetings with candidates for the post of United Nations Secretary-General, reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to multilateral cooperation and its continued support for the UN’s role in promoting global peace, security and sustainable development.
During a meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, the prime minister welcomed former Senegalese president and UN secretary-general candidate Macky Sall and reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism. He expressed hope that the next UN leadership would effectively advance the organisation’s three core pillars—international peace and security, development, and human rights—in a balanced and meaningful manner.
Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, stressing the importance of implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions and respecting international law and treaties to promote global peace, security and prosperity.
Macky Sall appreciated Pakistan’s longstanding contributions to the United Nations and commended the country’s constructive role in efforts to promote international peace.
In a separate meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz also met UN secretary-general candidate Rebeca Grynspan, where the two discussed the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation and upholding the principles of the UN Charter.
The prime minister underscored the need for balanced progress across the UN’s three core pillars and emphasised the importance of effectively implementing the global development agenda. He called for stronger international cooperation to help developing countries overcome economic and development challenges.
Rebeca Grynspan praised Pakistan’s longstanding contributions to the United Nations and appreciated its recent efforts to promote regional peace.
The meetings follow Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent engagement with another UN secretary-general candidate, María Fernanda Espinosa, during which both sides emphasised the importance of multilateral cooperation, adherence to international law and an effective United Nations in addressing global challenges.
