LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s vision to extend modern and environment-friendly public transport to the grassroots level is being implemented, with the electric bus service at the tehsil level scheduled to commence from January 2027. Under the approved plan, 1,500 electric buses will operate in 91 tehsils of Punjab, while dedicated e-bus depots for each tehsil had also been approved. The first batch of buses for the tehsil-level service will arrive in Lahore in January 2027.
Chairing a meeting here on Wednesday, the CM also approved the provision of additional electric buses to various districts, with a target to make 3,000 electric buses operational across Punjab by June 2027. The first phase of the expanded e-bus service was targeted for completion by September.
According to the allocation plan, 169 buses will be provided to nine tehsils of Multan, 87 to four tehsils of Sahiwal, 215 to 11 tehsils of Bahawalpur, 63 to 10 tehsils of Dera Ghazi Khan, 202 to 12 tehsils of Faisalabad and 198 to 14 tehsils of Sargodha.
Similarly, 125 electric buses will operate in seven tehsils of Gujranwala, 122 in eight tehsils of Gujrat and 219 in 16 tehsils of Rawalpindi.
At present, 612 electric buses are fully operational in various districts of Punjab, benefiting millions of citizens daily. Another 192 buses were expected to become operational in various districts, including Multan, within the next few days. Additional electric buses will also be provided to Sargodha, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Lahore, Muzaffargarh, Rawalpindi, Jhang, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Attock, besides Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot, Layyah, Okara, Sialkot, Murree, Gujrat and Sheikhupura. Further expansion was planned in Mandi Bahauddin, Vehari, Kasur, Lodhran, Nankana Sahib, Narowal, Gujranwala, and Multan to improve public transport connectivity across the province.
Meanwhile, work on the Faisalabad and Gujranwala mass transit systems was progressing rapidly, while construction and rehabilitation of 25 stations of the Lahore Metrobus Service was also underway.
The expansion of the electric bus network was aimed at providing citizens with affordable, modern, safe and environment-friendly public transport facilities at the tehsil level across Punjab.
