The main accused in the assault case involving University of Karachi Professor Dr Arif Khan Saqi has secured bail, while police have so far arrested five suspects.
Police had conducted raids at various locations to arrest Kunain Gohar Ali Shah but said he could no longer be taken into custody after obtaining bail.
A case was registered at Sachal Police Station on the complaint of Professor Arif Khan Saqi, chairman of the University of Karachi’s Department of Islamic Studies, against Kunain Ali Gohar Shah and others.
According to the FIR, Professor Arif was travelling to the university from his home with his nephew and driver, Waheed, when their car was hit near Sindh Green Hotel at Safoora Chowrangi.
The professor said he asked the occupants of the other vehicle to compensate for the damage and sought their names, after which they allegedly became angry and assaulted him and his nephew with pistol butts.
The FIR stated that two armed men allegedly struck them on the chest and head. After the victims fell injured, four more people allegedly arrived, beat them and took them to a hotel, where they were allegedly held against their will and subjected to further violence.
Professor Arif further alleged that the suspects resorted to aerial firing and took his nephew’s vehicle before police rescued them.
The suspects reportedly fled the scene, while Professor Arif later learned that one of the accused was Kunain Gohar Ali Shah and sought legal action against him.
