Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) emir Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has announced that the party will march towards Islamabad on September 20, saying the government has failed to accept its demands despite four rounds of negotiations.
Addressing a sit-in on Thursday, Hafiz Naeem said convoys from across the country would participate in the march, with groups departing from Karachi, Quetta, Chitral, Kalam and various parts of Punjab.
He said a train march from Karachi would travel to Islamabad via Multan and Lahore.
The JI emir criticised the government over the petroleum levy, saying it was placing an increasing financial burden on the public while taxes were being collected from poor and salaried segments of society.
He said the government had failed to provide an effective response to JI’s position during negotiations and remained unwilling to accept its demands.
Hafiz Naeem also highlighted the participation of women and children in the sit-ins, claiming that public participation in the protests was increasing.
He reiterated JI’s demand for the abolition of the petroleum levy and further relief for consumers through reductions in petrol prices.
