NEPRA considers Rs1.73 per unit power tariff hike

Electricity consumers across Pakistan, including K-Electric customers, may face an increase of Rs1.73 per unit under the August Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA).

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is reviewing a petition filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guarantee (CPPA-G) seeking the adjustment.

During the hearing on September 29, NEPRA reviewed data submitted by CPPA-G and is expected to announce its decision later today.

According to the data, power distribution companies (DISCOs) received 14.464 billion units of electricity in August at a reference cost of Rs8.82 per unit.

Hydropower accounted for the largest share of generation at 37.84%, while local and imported coal contributed 10.86% and 15.59%, respectively.

Local gas contributed 7.04% of generation, while imported LNG accounted for 8.48%. Electricity generated from imported LNG cost Rs45.92 per unit.

Furnace oil contributed 2.15% to the generation mix at a cost of Rs45.25 per unit.

According to the CPPA-G data, the relatively high generation costs of imported LNG and furnace oil contributed to the requested FCA adjustment.
