Case registered over Peshawar school collapse that killed 31

Police have registered a case against the owners, shareholders and contractor of a school in Peshawar’s Dir Colony following a roof collapse that reportedly killed 30 children and a female teacher and injured 52 others.

The case was registered at Agha Mir Jani Shah Police Station under Sections 148, 322 and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code in connection with the incident, which allegedly resulted from negligence.

According to the first information report (FIR), substandard construction materials were allegedly used in the school building, which was described as dilapidated and unfit for use. Complaints had reportedly been lodged earlier about the deteriorating condition of the building’s walls and roofs.

The FIR states that the school owners allegedly failed to take corrective measures despite repeated complaints and concerns raised by students about the building’s condition.

The roofs of a nursery classroom on the second floor and several rooms on the ground floor collapsed, according to the report.

The school was built on a 16-marla plot owned by Waheed and Javed. The land was reportedly leased in 2024, after which the school building was constructed.

Police said efforts were underway to arrest the suspects nominated in the case.

Meanwhile, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has formed district-level committees to inspect private school buildings across the province following the incident at Al-Khair Education System in Dir Colony.According to a notification issued by the provincial Elementary and Secondary Education Department, the committees will conduct physical inspections to identify structural defects, safety hazards and other issues that could endanger students, teachers and school staff.

The committees have been directed to submit detailed inspection reports, along with recommendations for corrective measures, to the department within three days of their formation.
