Azma Bokhari wins Rs84m defamation case against Punjab opposition leader

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has won a defamation case against Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Moeen Qureshi, with a Lahore tribunal ordering him to pay Rs84 million in damages.

Bokhari had filed the suit against Qureshi before the Defamation Tribunal in Lahore under the Defamation Act over allegations he made during a television programme.

Her counsel, Ali Bokhari, presented arguments on her behalf during the proceedings.

The case arose from remarks made by Qureshi concerning an incident during a visit by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi to the Punjab Assembly.

Qureshi had alleged that the information minister arranged for 150 to 200 paid individuals to enter the assembly premises during the chief minister’s visit.

He had also claimed that journalists who questioned the KP chief minister were paid employees of Bokhari.

Rejecting the allegations, the provincial information minister approached the tribunal and sought Rs84 million in damages.

The tribunal ruled in Bokhari’s favour and ordered Qureshi to pay her the claimed amount in damages.
