Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has set June 2027 as the deadline for completing 5,734 water filtration plants across the province, directing authorities to ensure their proper functioning and maintenance.
Chairing a meeting of the Punjab Saaf Pani Authority on Sunday, she ordered assistant commissioners to supervise the plants and establish public committees to monitor their performance in streets and neighbourhoods. Mobile maintenance units equipped with plumbers and technical staff will also be established in every tehsil to ensure timely repairs.
The chief minister approved a Last-Mile Water Supply Project to provide clean drinking water to affected areas of Chakwal, Rajanpur and Rawalpindi. She directed authorities to prioritise water supply schemes covering 256 kilometres in Chakwal and 1,780 kilometres in Rajanpur.
The meeting was also briefed on water bottling plants operating in Khushab, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalpur, which collectively produce 10,000 bottles of 19 litres each daily.
According to the briefing, around 4.8 million people have benefited from the Chief Minister’s Water Bottling Project, while more than 75,000 bottles of drinking water have been delivered to households.
Maryam Nawaz said access to clean drinking water was every citizen’s right and pledged to expand water supply schemes to other areas after Chakwal, Rajanpur and Rawalpindi.
