Govt slashes petrol, diesel prices by Rs5 per litre

ISLAMABAD  –  The federal government has slightly reduced the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel prices by Rs 5 per litre each.

The Government of Pakistan has revised the ex-depot prices of the petroleum products for the next week starting from 16th May, 2026, said a press release issued by the Petroleum Division here Friday.

Following the decrease, Petrol will slide to Rs 409.78 per liter from the existing Rs 414.78 per liter, while HSD will go down to Rs 409.58 per liter from the existing Rs 414.58 per liter.

Petrol is mostly used in private transport, small vehicles, three wheelers and two-wheelers, while high-speed diesel is mainly used in the heavy transport sector. The new prices will be effective from today (Saturday) till further revision.

Notably, for the last week ended May 15, the federal government had raised petrol and high-speed diesel prices by Rs 14.92 and Rs 15 per litre, respectively.

On March 6, the Federal Government announced a historic increase of Rs55 per litre in petrol and diesel prices. Following the increase, the price of petrol rose to Rs321.17 per litre from Rs266.17 per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) climbed to Rs335.86 per litre from Rs280.86 per litre.

Again on April 2, the Federal Government further increased the prices of Petrol and High Speed Diesel by Rs 137.23 per liter and Rs 184.49 per liter respectively. Following the increase the price of petrol was raised to Rs458.5 per liter, while high speed diesel gone to Rs520.35 per liter.However, after a day the government had slashed the petroleum levy on petrol by Rs80 per litre and brought the price of petrol down to Rs378 per litre.

On April 10, the Federal Government had reduced the prices of High Speed Diesel and Petrol by Rs 134.81 per liter and Rs 11.83 per liter respectively. However, again on April 24, the government had jacked up the prices of petrol and high speed diesel by Rs 26.77 per liter each. Similarly, on April 30 also the federal government raised petrol and high-speed diesel prices by Rs 6.51 and Rs 19.39 per litre, respectively.
