Govt committed to safeguarding minority rights: Tarar

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar on Thursday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting minority rights, saying consultations with minority communities were essential for ensuring that legislation and public policies reflected the needs and concerns of all citizens.

He made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation representing the Christian community. The meeting was also attended by Azam Nazeer Tarar.

According to an official statement, the participants held detailed discussions on minority rights, legal reforms and issues concerning the welfare of the Christian community.

Tarar said the government was committed to promoting interfaith harmony, equal citizenship and an inclusive society in which every Pakistani could contribute to national development without discrimination.

Members of the delegation appreciated the government’s efforts to safeguard the rights of minority communities and welcomed recent legislative measures, including the Child Marriage Restraint Act. They also acknowledged initiatives aimed at promoting equal opportunities through the National Commission for Minority Rights.

The meeting reviewed challenges faced by minority communities and explored ways to address the concerns of the Christian community through appropriate laws and policy measures.

Speaking on the occasion, Azam Tarar said the consultative process played an important role in advancing comprehensive legal and policy reforms. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring equal rights and opportunities for all citizens in accordance with the Constitution.

Both sides agreed to continue consultations on recommendations presented during the meeting and to develop an effective mechanism for addressing matters relating to Christian personal laws and other issues concerning the community.
