NDMA warns of glacier melt, flash floods amid pre-monsoon rains

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecast intermittent pre-monsoon rainfall in parts of Pakistan from June 28 to July 3, warning of an increased risk of glacier melting, flash floods and landslides in the country’s northern regions.

According to the NDMA, the combination of intense heat and expected pre-monsoon showers could speed up glacier melting, causing a sudden increase in water levels in rivers and streams across Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The authority warned that vulnerable areas may face glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), flash floods and landslides during the forecast period.

Residents, tourists and travellers have been advised to remain cautious while visiting high-risk districts, including Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, Shigar, Ghanche, Kharmang, Astore, Diamer, Upper and Lower Chitral, and Swat.

The NDMA urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers, streams, glacial lakes and riverbanks, and to immediately report any unusual situation to the relevant local authorities.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) have also been directed to stay on high alert and ensure all necessary preparations are in place to deal with any emergency arising from the expected weather conditions.
