PMDC fines FJMU Rs20 million over student’s death

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has imposed a fine of Rs20 million on Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU) over the death of a student, Fariha Ibrahim, in the university hostel in Lahore.

The PMDC Disciplinary Committee imposed the penalty after reviewing the circumstances of the incident, stating that the university was responsible for ensuring adequate measures for the safety and welfare of its students.

The committee directed the university to strengthen student oversight and ensure regular monitoring of their physical and mental well-being.

It also instructed FJMU to introduce mentorship, harassment prevention and counselling programmes for female students.

According to committee documents, the decision was sent to the university after formal approval by the PMDC Council. The council had earlier sought a formal response from FJMU regarding the student’s death.

Meanwhile, FJMU has filed a review petition with the PMDC challenging the Rs20 million penalty.

Fariha, a 22-year-old final-year student originally from Kashmir, died in February after reportedly jumping from the third floor of the university hostel. She sustained critical head injuries and was taken to hospital, where she died due to excessive blood loss, according to police. At the time of the incident, her final-year examinations were under way. One paper had been completed, while another was scheduled for February 19.

Police said preliminary findings indicated that the student had reportedly been experiencing severe depression for around six months. Further investigation was initiated to establish the circumstances surrounding her death, and a medical board was constituted to examine the case.

The PMDC’s action underscores the university’s responsibility to maintain a safe environment and provide appropriate support systems for students.
