SHC defers hearing on contempt petition in former judge’s degree case until after winter break

The Sindh High Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of a contempt of court petition linked to the academic degree controversy of former judge Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, postponing the matter until after the winter holidays.

The contempt petition has been filed against Karachi University Vice Chancellor Professor Khalid Mehmood Iraqi and Registrar Professor Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, both of whom have already submitted affidavits before the court.

During the hearing, the university registrar argued that the Islamabad High Court had already issued a final verdict on the degree issue. He maintained that since the IHC’s decision was announced after the contempt petition was filed, the petition had effectively lost its relevance and should be dismissed.

The registrar further submitted that Karachi University had not taken any action following the Sindh High Court’s October 3 order and had not issued any notifications or directives in this regard. He added that the Islamabad High Court had sought university records through the Higher Education Commission.

The vice chancellor told the court that Karachi University had provided all required records to the Islamabad High Court as directed, without making any changes.

Counsel for the petitioner requested an early hearing, citing the urgency of the matter. However, Justice Yousuf Ali Sayeed noted that it was the last sitting of the bench for the day and that the case would be taken up after the winter recess in line with the court roster.

The court extended the existing injunction until the next hearing and deferred further proceedings until after the winter holidays.
