US media calls 2025 a turning point in Pakistan–US relations, signals end of ‘India First’ policy

A prominent American publication has described 2025 as a year of dramatic transformation in Pakistan–United States relations, pointing to a major shift in Washington’s diplomatic priorities in South Asia.

An article published by The Washington Times highlights a notable change in President Donald Trump’s approach towards Pakistan, stating that the long-standing “India First” policy has faded, with Islamabad emerging as a key partner for Washington. According to the report, the brief but intense Pakistan–India conflict in May 2025 proved to be a decisive moment that reshaped US policy in the region.

The article offers detailed insight into the evolving relationship between Field Marshal Asim Munir and President Trump, noting that Pakistan’s standing has shifted from that of a marginalized state to a central player in US strategic thinking. It characterises the rapid improvement in Pakistan’s image as rare, placing Islamabad at the heart of Trump’s South Asia strategy.

Initially, US policy focused on bolstering India through regional alliances such as the Quad, while Pakistan remained on the sidelines. However, internal political challenges in India, growing restrictions on civil liberties, uneven military performance, and diplomatic setbacks gradually undermined India’s role as a reliable regional stabiliser.

The report further states that behind-the-scenes counterterrorism cooperation helped break the ice between Washington and Islamabad, offering tangible evidence of Pakistan’s willingness to engage constructively. This cooperation culminated in an unexpected public praise of Pakistan by President Trump during a national address in March, signalling a clear shift in US policy.

Pakistan, the article notes, capitalised on this opening by converting limited cooperation into significant diplomatic gains. As engagement deepened, the relationship moved beyond transactional exchanges toward a broader strategic partnership, with the May 2025 Pakistan–India clash marking the final catalyst for the policy realignment.
