The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has predicted that the crescent marking the beginning of Rabiul Sani 1448 Hijri may be sighted on Sept 12, subject to favourable weather conditions.
According to the space agency, the new moon is expected to be born at 8:27pm Pakistan Standard Time. By sunset on Sept 12, its age is expected to be around 34 hours and 33 minutes.
Suparco said the time difference between sunset and moonset along Pakistan’s coastal areas would be approximately 39 minutes.
Given these astronomical conditions, the crescent could be visible to the naked eye in coastal areas on the evening of Sept 12 if the weather remains clear. In other parts of the country, it is expected to be observable with the aid of telescopes.
Based on astronomical calculations, Rabiul Sani 1448 Hijri is likely to begin on Sunday, Sept 13, following the completion of Rabiul Awwal.
However, the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee will make the final announcement regarding the start of the Islamic month after reviewing verified moon-sighting testimonies received from different parts of the country.
