Big deal: Pakistan to export conventional arms to Libya

Islamabad   –  Pakistan has reached an agreement to supply conventional arms and military equipment to Libya, offi-cials said, describing it as one of the largest defense export deals concluded by the country in recent years.

The agreement, valued in the billions of dollars, involves Pakistan manufactured weapons and related equipment. Officials said the deal fits into the government’s broader push to expand exports and re-duce reliance on external financing.

Pakistan has expanded its domestic industrial capacity in recent years, including in defense production, large scale manufacturing, information technology, artificial intelligence, mining and minerals, agricul-ture, and related technologies. Locally produced defense systems were displayed during the recent Mark e Haq military exercises, where officials said they drew attention from visiting delegations.

Pakistan has supplied conventional arms and equipment to multiple countries in the past. Officials said the Libya agreement stands out because of its scale and expected financial impact.

Libya remains under a United Nations arms embargo, although weapons have continued to reach the country for more than a decade. UN reports have documented violations by several Western and Middle Eastern states accused of supplying arms to rival Libyan factions despite the restrictions.

Government sources said enforcement of the embargo has been inconsistent for years and noted that arms transfers to Libya have continued through multiple channels.

Officials said the deal reflects Pakistan’s effort to expand its defense exports and establish itself as a regular supplier of conventional military equipment in international markets. No specific details were released about the types of weapons involved or the timeline for deliveries.
