President Asif Ali Zardari has summoned a joint session of Parliament of Pakistan for tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., where he will deliver his constitutional address.
The session has been convened under Articles 54(1) and 56(3) of the Constitution, which empower the President to call Parliament into joint sitting. According to the National Assembly Secretariat, the joint session is traditionally held at the start of each parliamentary year, and the President’s address is a mandatory constitutional requirement. This will be President Zardari’s ninth address to a joint session of Parliament.
Preparations for the session are underway, with enhanced security arrangements in place in view of the tense regional environment. The President is expected to comment on recent developments, including tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as ongoing hostilities involving the United States, Israel and Iran, and retaliatory attacks in the wider Gulf region.
The address is also expected to outline the government’s two-year performance, national priorities, democratic consolidation, constitutional supremacy, sustainable economic development, regional and global affairs, and Pakistan’s commitment to counterterrorism, including efforts to dismantle externally backed terrorist networks.
