Fazl announces protests over fuel price hike

Chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Maulana Fazlur Rehman, on Monday announced nationwide protests on Friday against the rising prices of petroleum products.

Addressing a press conference in Peshawar, he said the increasing cost of fuel had added to the difficulties faced by the common man, claiming that peace had been “snatched away” from the public.

The JUI-F chief said demonstrations would be held across Pakistan, criticising the government’s economic policies and alleging that outdated laws continued to be imposed.

Maulana termed the current government “illegitimate” and claimed it was surviving with the support of the Pakistan People’s Party. He also alleged that the country’s leadership was aligned with United States policies, particularly in the context of the Middle East situation, where Washington has backed Israel.
He further said his party would raise its voice at a public gathering in Mardan on April 12 and reiterated his earlier proposal for an in-camera session of parliament to brief lawmakers on the evolving global situation.

Referring to international developments, the JUI-F chief claimed that Europe had largely stayed away from the conflict, while alleging that the American public was increasingly critical of President Donald Trump.

Fazalur Rehman also criticised the government over rising inflation, deteriorating law and order, and what he described as unstable provincial policies. He added that no significant steps had been taken so far to eliminate interest from the economic system.
