The Punjab government has prepared a plan to reduce fines for traffic violations across the province, with formal approval expected after it is presented before the provincial assembly.
According to officials, the proposal has been approved by the chief minister following a summary submitted by the DIG Traffic Punjab and will now be tabled in the Punjab Assembly for final approval.
Under the proposed plan, fines for motorcycles will be reduced from Rs2,000 to Rs1,000, while penalties for rickshaws will be lowered from Rs3,000 to Rs1,000. However, serious violations by rickshaws will still attract a fine of Rs2,000.
For cars and jeeps, fines are proposed to be reduced from Rs5,000 to Rs3,000. Penalties for overspeeding across motorcycles, rickshaws, and cars will remain unchanged.
The summary also proposes a significant reduction in fines for 2,000cc and luxury vehicles, bringing them down from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000. Under the revised structure, penalties for such vehicles will range between Rs2,000 and Rs10,000 depending on the nature of the violation.
Fines for public transport vehicles, including Mazda, coaster, and small passenger vans, are proposed to be reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs7,000.
Similarly, penalties for trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles will be reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000, while other fines for light and heavy vehicles will also see reductions of up to Rs10,000.
Officials say the move aims to rationalize penalties while maintaining enforcement of traffic laws across the province.
