Punjab makes digital attendance mandatory in public schools

The Punjab Government has made online attendance compulsory for all public schools, requiring both students and teachers to record their presence digitally in a move aimed at promoting transparency and improving governance in the education sector.

Under the new directive, individuals who fail to mark attendance through the system will be treated as absent. Authorities have also warned that schools failing to regularly update the School Information System will face strict disciplinary action.

District education chief executive officers (CEOs) have been tasked with ensuring compliance with the directive across their respective jurisdictions.

The provincial education secretary has expressed concern over delays in uploading student admissions and attendance data, stressing the need for timely and accurate record-keeping. All pending entries have been directed to be completed by April 20, 2026.

Officials have cautioned that action may be taken under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability Act in cases where data is found to be missing or inaccurate.

To ensure implementation, monitoring teams will conduct surprise inspections, while head teachers will be held directly accountable for any lapses. The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the provincial government to enhance transparency, accountability and digital management within the public school system.
