A man died in police custody in Nawabshah, with his family alleging that he was tortured to death, while police claimed he died by suicide.
According to the victim’s relatives, Arshad Bhatti had been detained by police and was subjected to torture at the B-Section police station lockup, which they say led to his death.
However, SSP Sameer Noor Channa said the man allegedly took his own life by hanging himself in the washroom. He added that Bhatti had been arrested from Gujrah Wah a day earlier in connection with a theft case.
Police said the body was shifted to People’s Medical University under the supervision of a magistrate.
Following the incident, DIG Shaheed Benazirabad Basheer Memon has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the death. Officials said the committee, headed by SSP Naushahro Feroz, will examine the circumstances surrounding the case.
