Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), underwent his fourth intravitreal eye injection on Tuesday at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) as part of his ongoing treatment.
According to a medical statement issued by the hospital, Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated at Adiala Jail, was brought to the facility for the scheduled procedure. A team of ophthalmologists conducted a detailed examination prior to the injection and found him clinically stable.
An Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan performed before the procedure showed signs of improvement, the statement said.
The injection was administered in the operation theatre under microscopic guidance in line with standard medical protocols. Hospital authorities said the procedure was conducted as a day-care surgery and that the former prime minister remained vitally stable before, during and after the treatment.
He was later discharged with medical advice, follow-up instructions and the necessary documentation.
The latest procedure forms part of his ongoing eye treatment. Earlier, Imran Khan was shifted to the hospital on March 23 for his third injection following a comprehensive evaluation. Prior to that, on March 18, a five-member medical board examined him at Adiala Jail on the directives of the Islamabad High Court.
Medical reports submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan stated that former prime minister Imran Khan has been diagnosed with Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO), a serious condition caused by blockage of the main vein draining blood from the retina.
The condition is commonly associated with risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease.
The report, submitted by his counsel Salman Safdar, also noted that Khan had complained of losing up to 85 per cent of vision in his right eye.
Imran Khan, 73, has been in custody since August 2023 following multiple convictions, which he and his party say are politically motivated. Since his removal from office in 2022 through a no-confidence vote, he has faced several legal cases, some of which have been suspended or overturned, while appeals in others remain pending.
