PTCL warns of possible internet slowdown during submarine cable maintenance

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has warned customers of possible internet service degradation during scheduled maintenance work on an international submarine cable from May 11 to May 18.

In a statement shared on X, the company said a repair operation would be carried out by the International Cable Consortium to fix a fault in one of its submarine cables.

“A maintenance activity is planned on one of our submarine cables to repair a fault by the International Cable Consortium,” PTCL said, adding that the work would begin on May 11 and could continue until May 18.

The company said users may experience slower internet speeds, particularly during evening hours, while the maintenance work is under way.

Internet disruptions caused by faults in undersea cables have remained a recurring issue in Pakistan in recent years, often affecting connectivity and browsing speeds for users across the country.

The warning comes as Pakistan’s telecom sector continues to expand next-generation connectivity infrastructure, including the gradual rollout of 5G services in selected areas following the issuance of spectrum licences.

Earlier this year, the government also completed a major spectrum auction, generating significant revenue through the sale of 480 megahertz of frequency bands aimed at improving communication services and digital connectivity.Telecom authorities say periodic maintenance and infrastructure upgrades are necessary to meet rising internet demand and ensure stable long-term service delivery, despite temporary disruptions.

Users have been advised to expect minor slowdowns during peak usage hours and plan their online activities accordingly.
