Nawaz Sharif nominates Iftikhar Gilani for AJK premiership

MUZAFFARABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has nominated Barrister Syed Iftikhar Ali Gilani for the post of prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

PML-N Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb said consultations on the formation of the new government in AJK had been completed at the Prime Minister’s House, with Gilani’s name finalised for the top constitutional position.

She said Nawaz Sharif had directed Iftikhar Gilani to submit his nomination papers for the election of the AJK prime minister.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting to discuss the formation of the new PML-N government in AJK.

Senator Rana Sanaullah, Khawaja Saad Rafique, PML-N AJK President Shah Ghulam Qadir and former AJK prime minister Raja Farooq Haider attended the meeting.

Newly elected AJK Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Tariq Farooq, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Raza Qadri and Iftikhar Gilani, who was elected on a technocrat seat, were also present.

The meeting discussed key decisions regarding government formation and the party’s future parliamentary strategy.

Participants also deliberated on the proposed cabinet, government priorities, good governance and measures to improve the functioning of the administration.

The AJK Legislative Assembly is scheduled to elect the new prime minister on August 28.
