Dense fog disrupts flights, shuts motorways across Punjab

Dense fog and freezing temperatures continued to disrupt normal life in several parts of the country on Sunday, leading to partial suspension of flight operations and the closure of key motorways at various points.

At Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport, thick mist affected flight schedules, causing delays to several international departures. A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight bound for Madinah was delayed by around three hours due to poor visibility, while a flight to Abu Dhabi was cancelled as dense fog engulfed Lahore and other districts of Punjab.

The fog also blanketed major roads in many cities, prompting the authorities to close several sections of the motorway network as a precautionary measure. Due to reduced visibility, traffic was stopped on the M2 from Lahore to Kot Momin, the M3 from Faizpur to Darkhana, and the M4 from Pindi Bhattian to Multan.

Similarly, vehicles were barred from entering the M5 (Multan to Rohri) and the M11 (Lahore to Sambrial). Foggy conditions were also reported on sections of the national highway in and around Lahore, Manga Mandi, Pattoki, Okara, Sahiwal and Ahmedpur Sharqia.

Traffic movement remained slow and hazardous in Mian Channu, Khanewal, Multan, Basti Maluk, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Sadiqabad due to persistently low visibility.

A spokesperson for the Motorway Police advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel, urging citizens to plan their journeys during daylight hours when visibility conditions are relatively safer.
