ISLAMABAD – National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq on Friday formally notified PkMAP chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.
The notification was issued under Rule 39 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007. Asper the notification, Mehmood Khan Achakzai, MNA, has been declared the Leader of the Opposition.
Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq handed over the official notification of MNA, Mr. Mehmood Khan Achakzai as Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly to a delegation of opposition members.
The delegation included Members of the National Assembly Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Mr. Junaid Akbar, Sardar Latif Khosa, Mr. Jamal Ehsan Khan, Mr. Shehram Khan, Ms. Shandana Gulzar, Makhdoom M. Zain Qureshi, Mr. Ali Asghar Khan, Malik Anwar Taj, and Mr. Yousaf Khan.
On this occasion, Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Mr. Azam Nazeer Tarar and Coordinator to PM on Climate Change, Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam were also present.
Achakzai was the only nominee from opposition benches for the slot of opposition leader seat, vacant for the last five months. PTI, the main opposition party, had proposed a senior lawmaker from Balochistan for the second time.
The opposition, the other day [Wednesday], for the second time nominated Mehmood Khan Achakzai MNA (NA-266) for appointment as the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly. The slot has been lying vacant for around half a year since the disqualification of former opposition leader from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf [PTI] Omar Ayub in August 2025.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf [PTI] senior leader Amir Dogar, in this respect, had held several meetings with Speaker National Assembly (NA) to discuss matters related to the appointment of the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly (NA).
According to the request forwarded by the opposition members, “We, the undersigned members of the National Assembly belonging to the opposition benches, have the honour to nominate Mehmood Khan Achakzai MNA (NA-266) for appointment as the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan.”
