The Punjab government has announced an expansion of its flagship housing initiative, Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar, extending its scope to benefit joint families across the province.
Under the expanded program, joint families will be able to obtain interest-free loans on easy installments to expand their existing homes. The move aims to support the traditional joint family system while promoting social harmony and improved living conditions.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif described the initiative as a “golden gift” for the people of Punjab, reaffirming the government’s commitment to housing development and social cohesion. She said the inclusion of joint families would help preserve shared living arrangements while addressing growing housing needs.
The government has set a target of constructing 160,000 homes by June 2026. In addition, families without land will be allotted plots and provided interest-free loans under the Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar scheme. In the first phase, 1,534 plots will be allocated through a lottery system in cities including Jhelum, Kasur, Faisalabad, and Lodhran.
According to an official briefing, more than 1.88 million users have registered under the housing program, with over 1.06 million applicants currently seeking benefits. So far, 67,197 homes have been completed, while 53,843 are under construction. The program has seen loan disbursements totaling Rs164.66 billion, with a recovery rate of 99 percent. The chief minister also directed authorities to speed up the release of upcoming installments, increase project funding, and develop policies to support families in case of the death of a primary applicant, ensuring continuity of assistance.
Officials said the expansion marks a significant step toward addressing Punjab’s housing shortage while aligning financial support with cultural and social values.
