FO rejects ‘baseless’ media reports attributed to official sources on regional conflict

The Foreign Office categorically rejected media reports citing purported official government sources on the ongoing regional conflict and Pakistan’s peace diplomacy, terming them “baseless and a figment of imagination.”

In a formal statement, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said the ministry had noted several reports circulating in mainstream and social media that attributed claims to so-called official sources regarding the conflict and Islamabad’s efforts to promote peace and dialogue.

“Any attribution to official sources in this regard is incorrect,” the statement said, adding that it was a matter of concern that a Friday briefing held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had been misrepresented, with references to issues that were neither discussed nor alluded to during the session.

The statement comes at a particularly sensitive moment in Pakistan’s diplomatic calendar. Islamabad is simultaneously managing multiple high-stakes tracks — its facilitation role in US-Iran negotiations, the outcome of the four-nation foreign ministers’ meeting held in the capital on March 30, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar’s visit to Beijing that produced a joint five-point peace initiative, and the ongoing China-mediated talks with Afghanistan in Urumqi.

The FO statement urged media platforms to exercise due diligence, avoid speculation, and rely exclusively on officially issued statements and media readouts for accurate information.
“At a time of heightened regional sensitivity, diplomacy requires both discretion and responsibility,” the statement said.
