5.5 magnitude earthquake jolts parts of country

Tremors were felt in several parts of the country, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar, on Saturday, causing panic among residents who rushed out of their homes and workplaces.

According to the seismic monitoring centre, the earthquake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale and had a depth of 199 kilometres. The epicentre was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.

The tremors were also recorded in several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Swat, Hangu, North Waziristan and Chitral, as well as in Charsadda, Nowshera, Haripur, Malakand, Swabi, Khyber, Buner and Shangla.

Reports indicated that mild to moderate shaking was felt across these regions, while tremors were also experienced in parts of Afghanistan.

Authorities said no casualties or damage to property had been reported immediately after the quake.
