Karachi to see slight dip in temperature amid ongoing heatwave

The weather in Karachi remained hot and dry on Tuesday, though temperatures are expected to fall slightly compared to the previous day, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said.

According to the Met Office, the city’s temperature was recorded at 35°C, with the mercury likely to rise between 37°C and 39°C during the day — lower than Monday’s peak, which exceeded 40°C. Humidity was recorded at around 20 per cent, contributing to the dry conditions.

Officials said Monday was the hottest day of the year so far in the port city.

The Met Office has forecast another heatwave across Sindh from May 7, while Karachi is expected to experience another spell of high temperatures starting May 13. It also ruled out any chances of rainfall in the city during May based on current weather patterns.

Authorities have advised residents to take precautionary measures, including avoiding direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours and ensuring adequate hydration.

The city experienced extreme heat on Monday as temperatures soared above 40°C due to the suspension of sea breeze, coupled with persistent hot and dry northwesterly winds, pushing conditions towards a heatwave.

The ongoing spell of intense heat over the past two days has reportedly resulted in 14 deaths in the metropolis, including eight fatalities recorded on Monday.

Elsewhere in the province, temperatures surged to 43°C in Hyderabad, while several districts — including Nawabshah, Dadu, Larkana, Sanghar, Sakrand and Mirpur Khas — also recorded temperatures exceeding 40°C.
