US to close Peshawar consulate, shifts operations to Islamabad embassy

The United States Department of State has announced the phased closure of its consulate general in Peshawar, transferring diplomatic responsibilities to the US Embassy Islamabad.

In a statement, the department said matters related to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would now be handled by its embassy in Islamabad, adding that the move was aimed at ensuring the safety of diplomatic personnel and improving resource management.

Despite the closure, Washington emphasised that its policy priorities in Pakistan remained unchanged. It said engagement with provincial authorities and local communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would continue, focusing on economic cooperation, regional security and areas of mutual interest.

“While our physical presence in Peshawar is changing, the administration’s policy priorities in Pakistan remain steadfast,” the statement said.

The State Department added that the US mission would continue its diplomatic operations through its remaining posts in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore, reaffirming its commitment to bilateral relations between the two countries.
