GB election re-poll ordered at women’s polling station after unrest

The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan (EGB) has ordered re-polling at a women’s polling station in constituency GBA-15 after declaring the earlier vote void due to disturbances that disrupted polling during the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections.

According to an official notification, polling at the Loshi Thak women’s polling station was affected by stone-pelting, gunfire and a worsening law-and-order situation, preventing a significant number of registered voters from casting their ballots.

The commission said that although around 200 votes were polled, many eligible voters were unable to exercise their right to vote because of the unrest. Polling staff were subsequently evacuated from the station under security arrangements.

In view of the circumstances, the EGB declared the polling process at the station void and announced that re-polling would be held on June 15 from 8am to 5pm without any break.

The commission said all necessary steps would be taken to ensure that the re-polling is conducted in a transparent, fair and lawful manner. It added that the returning officer for GBA-15 would personally oversee the polling arrangements.

Meanwhile, official results have been announced for 22 constituencies in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections. The Pakistan Peoples Party emerged as the largest party, securing 10 seats, followed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz with four seats.

Independent candidates won seven seats, while Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen secured one seat. Results for constituencies GBA-13 and GBA-14 in Astore have yet to be announced.
