SIALKOT – Federal Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif inaugurated the one-kilometre-long Faiz Ahmed Faiz Flyover in Adalat Garha, Sialkot, constructed at a cost of Rs1.984 billion. Punjab Minister for Labour and Human Resources Muhammad Manshaullah Butt, Deputy Commissioner Awais Mushtaq, Member of the Provincial Assembly Chaudhry Faisal Ikram and other officials were also present on the occasion. Speaking to the media after the inauguration, the defence minister said the flyover would serve as a major public facility for the city and its residents by significantly easing longstanding traffic congestion in the area. He said the project fulfilled a long-standing demand of the local population and expressed gratitude to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for making its completion possible. Khawaja Muhammad Asif announced that work on the first phase of the Sialkot Ring Road would commence soon. The project will connect Wazirabad Road, Daska Road, Eminabad Road and Pasrur Road, bringing about a transformative improvement in the city’s transport infrastructure. He said that despite economic challenges, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif continues to prioritize development projects across Punjab.
He further said the flyover would provide improved access to Wazirabad Road and, in the future, would be integrated with the Sialkot Ring Road, facilitating smoother traffic flow, promoting industrial activity, and improving access to Sialkot International Airport.
The defence minister said that since beginning his public service journey for Sialkot two years ago, every effort has been made to represent the city effectively. He added that the government would present a comprehensive account of its development initiatives and public service achievements before the people in the next general elections.Referring to major infrastructure projects, he said the contract for the Rs250 billion Kharian–Rawat Motorway has been awarded to the Frontier Works Organization (FWO). He described the motorway as a project of immense importance for both the region’s economic development and national defence, acknowledging the contributions of the federal government, former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, and the military leadership.
Khawaja Muhammad Asif noted that Sialkot was once regarded as a city served only by a railway branch line and had long been deprived of the infrastructure it deserved.
Although the GT-Road could not be routed through Sialkot, he said, adding Muhammad Nawaz Sharif brought the landmark motorway project to the city, which would remain a historic milestone in its development.
Welcoming the newly posted Deputy Commissioner Awais Mushtaq, the Defence Minister urged him to play an active role in ensuring effective coordination with the Punjab government and the timely completion of all approved and proposed development projects.
He said close coordination among Punjab Minister Muhammad Manshaullah Butt, MPA Chaudhry Faisal Ikram and the district administration would be essential for expediting development initiatives.

Speaking to media, the minister said the flyover fulfilled a long-standing demand of the people and thanked Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for supporting the project’s completion.
He announced that work on the first phase of the Sialkot Ring Road would begin soon. The project will connect Wazirabad, Daska, Eminabad and Pasrur roads, improving the city’s transport network and supporting industrial and commercial activity.
Khawaja Asif said the newly inaugurated flyover would provide better access to Wazirabad Road and would eventually be linked with the Sialkot Ring Road, facilitating smoother traffic flow and improving access to Sialkot International Airport.
Referring to other development projects, he said the contract for the Rs250 billion Kharian-Rawat Motorway had been awarded to the Frontier Works Organization (FWO), describing it as a strategically important project for regional development and national defence.
The minister welcomed newly posted Deputy Commissioner Awais Mushtaq and urged close coordination among the district administration, the Punjab government and elected representatives to ensure the timely completion of ongoing and upcoming development projects.
Paying tribute to renowned poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Khawaja Asif said naming the flyover after him was a recognition of his enduring literary legacy and his contribution to society.
