LAHORE: The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has procured 100 specialised biometric machines from abroad to speed up the identification of unclaimed bodies and missing persons through its ‘Meri Pehchan Centre’.
According to PSCA officials, the machines can be used to identify unidentified bodies in cases where conventional biometric devices are ineffective.
The authority said the technology would make the identification process faster and help authorities trace the families of unclaimed bodies.
The Meri Pehchan service uses biometric data linked with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) database to identify missing persons, including mentally and physically vulnerable individuals, as well as unidentified bodies.
Officials said more than 7,000 unidentified-body cases had been processed through the centre so far, with over 5,000 bodies identified and handed over to their families.
The system has also helped identify more than 4,000 mentally and physically vulnerable people and reunite them with their families.
PSCA said the technology had enabled authorities to identify an unidentified person within minutes in at least one reported case.
