PIMS Hospital fire death toll rises to 15

The death toll from the fire at PIMS Hospital has risen to 15 after Aizal, the only infant rescued alive from the blaze, died while undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit.

According to sources, a nurse rescued Aizal from the nursery during the fire and she was subsequently shifted to the ICU for treatment. However, the six-month-old infant later succumbed to her injuries.

Aizal’s mother, Asifa Bibi, said her daughter was six months and 10 days old and had been born on August 12. She said the infant had suffered from smoke inhalation and was the couple’s first child.

Earlier, 14 newborns had been reported dead in the PIMS nursery fire, while one infant had been rescued alive.

The latest death has brought the total number of children killed in the incident to 15.
