Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced the end of its 35-day sit-in outside the Governor House in Karachi against inflation and the petroleum levy.
According to a JI spokesperson, party workers will join the long march from Sunday morning. The march will begin from Karachi and proceed towards Islamabad by train.
JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman will address party workers at Cantt Station before leading them in the train march.
Addressing participants at the sit-in on Saturday, Hafiz Naeem said the protest movement would now continue through the train march, reiterating the party’s demand for the abolition of the petroleum levy.
He warned that if the government failed to withdraw the levy, the movement could turn into a campaign to oust the government.
Hafiz Naeem congratulated JI workers, including women, elderly people and young participants, for sustaining the protest. He said traders, industrialists, lawyers, religious scholars, teachers, students, poets, writers and people from different schools of thought had also participated in the sit-in.
The JI has maintained that temporary relief measures are insufficient and called for a reduction in taxes on petroleum products to provide sustained relief to the public.
The sit-in was part of the party’s nationwide campaign against the petroleum levy and in support of broader economic relief measures.
