Mian Amer Mahmood calls for better governance, public service delivery

Mian Amer Mahmood, chairman of Dunya Media Group, has called for practical measures to improve the lives of Pakistan’s 250 million people, stressing the need to prioritise public welfare and the delivery of essential services.

Addressing officers undergoing training at the Pakistan Administrative Services Academy, Mian Amer said Pakistan had yet to achieve the level of development it was capable of attaining.

He said he had started writing about smaller administrative units in 2008, clarifying that the debate was not about dividing the country but about improving governance and making public services more accessible to citizens.

Emphasising the importance of public service, he said local governments should play an effective role in addressing people’s needs and resolving their problems.

Mian Amer added that his discussion was not centred on personal or political matters. He also stressed the importance of asking questions, saying it helped people understand issues and the complexities surrounding them.

Referring to Pakistan’s administrative structure at the time of independence in 1947, he said the country had four provinces, while East Pakistan constituted another part of the country before becoming Bangladesh in 1971.
