Petrol price cut row sparks protest, vandalism in Karachi

Residents in Karachi reacted angrily after a government-announced reduction in petrol prices was not implemented at some fuel stations, leading to a violent incident in the city’s Surjani Town area.

According to reports, a group of enraged individuals vandalised a petrol pump and assaulted staff after the station allegedly continued charging higher rates despite the official price cut.

The pump administration later contacted police, seeking legal action against those involved. Authorities said strict action would be taken with the help of CCTV footage to identify the attackers.

Police officials also noted that the public reaction was triggered by the station’s failure to comply with the revised pricing directive.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had earlier announced a significant reduction of Rs80 per litre in petrol prices, bringing the rate down from Rs458 to Rs378, effective from midnight. However, some pump owners reportedly did not implement the new rates.

In his address, the prime minister also announced a Rs100 per litre subsidy for motorcycle users, adding that a mechanism for its implementation had already been finalised.
