CM Maryam orders strict workplace safety compliance across Punjab

LAHORE  –  Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed authorities to ensure the provision of safety equipment and strict implementation of precautionary measures in factories, industrial units and offices across the province.

In her message on the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the chief minister emphasised the need to protect both the physical and mental well-being of workers. She instructed the Labour Department and other relevant agencies to take firm action against violations of workplace safety laws. Terming labour welfare and workplace safety a cornerstone of national development, she reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting and rehabilitating workers. “A healthy and safe worker can build a strong nation,” she said, urging industrialists to prioritise employee safety and adopt protective measures against occupational hazards.

The chief minister also highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of safety in workplaces, noting that amendments to labour laws are being introduced to strengthen worker protection and align with international standards.

She warned that industries failing to ensure workers’ health and safety would face penalties, stressing that compliance with safety protocols is non-negotiable. Highlighting ongoing welfare measures, she said 1.4 million workers are receiving monthly financial assistance through ration cards, while an additional 50,000 labourers will be included during the current fiscal year.

Describing the workforce as a vital national asset, the chief minister said ensuring a safe and secure working environment remains a top priority of the provincial government.
