Pakistan on Monday strongly condemned the reported drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the United Arab Emirates on May 17, describing the targeting of nuclear facilities as a serious violation of international law.
In a statement, the Foreign Office said Pakistan stood in full solidarity with the government and people of the UAE, adding that deliberate attacks on nuclear installations violated international humanitarian law, the United Nations Charter and internationally recognised principles of nuclear safety and security under the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The statement stressed that nuclear facilities should never be targeted under any circumstances, warning that such actions could lead to catastrophic and irreversible consequences for human life, the environment, and regional and global peace and security.
The Foreign Office said the protection of civilian nuclear infrastructure was a well-established international norm that must be upheld without exception.
Pakistan also called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, fulfil their obligations under international law and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions in the region.
It reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy, in line with the principles of the UN Charter, remained the only viable path towards lasting peace, stability and de-escalation.
