Saudi Arabia has appointed Dr Rajeh Tami Albugamy as its new ambassador to Pakistan, replacing Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki, as the two longtime allies continue to expand cooperation in defence, investment and regional security amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
Albugamy was among eight newly appointed Saudi envoys who took the oath of office this week, according to a statement issued by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“On behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and before His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, the newly appointed ambassadors to a number of brotherly and friendly countries took the oath,” the ministry said on Tuesday.
The ministry also released photographs of the newly appointed envoys, including Albugamy, who will head Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic mission in Pakistan.
A retired major general, Albugamy later joined the Saudi Foreign Ministry with the rank of ambassador. He holds a doctorate in Human Resource Management from Brunel University London.
His appointment comes as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan continue to strengthen their longstanding strategic partnership. Less than a year ago, the two countries signed a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement under which an act of aggression against either country would be treated as an attack on both, formalising decades of close military cooperation.
