The government has formally approved the import of 750,000 metric tonnes of wheat to meet domestic requirements amid concerns over supplies and rising demand.
The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has issued an international tender for the procurement, with bids to be submitted and opened on September 16.
According to the tender, the wheat must be sourced from the latest crop and should be milling wheat meeting prescribed quality standards. International suppliers must submit offers for a minimum quantity of 50,000 metric tonnes.
The wheat will be delivered to Karachi and Gwadar ports on a Cost and Freight (CFR) basis.
Under the government’s distribution plan, Sindh will receive 300,000 tonnes, Punjab 250,000 tonnes and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 200,000 tonnes.
The decision comes as Pakistan faces a gap between domestic wheat production and annual consumption. According to the Economic Survey 2025-26, the country’s annual wheat consumption stands at around 31.3 million tonnes, while production during the previous fiscal year was recorded at 29.61 million tonnes.
The imported wheat is expected to help bridge the supply gap and ensure adequate availability across the provinces.
