ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal has said that simplicity for those in power is a moral responsibility when a nation is facing inflation and economic hardships.
In a statement on X, the minister cited the example of Hazrat Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, describing him as a “gem of Islamic history” and highlighting his transformation from a privileged ruler to one who adopted a simple lifestyle after assuming responsibility for the caliphate.
Ahsan Iqbal said Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz gave up his royal luxuries, including expensive clothing, perfumes and means of transport, and deposited valuable household jewellery into the public treasury.He said the ruler understood that once a person assumes responsibility for the Ummah, his standard of living cannot remain detached from the circumstances of the people.
According to the minister, Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz’s transformation was a conscious choice reflecting the moral responsibilities associated with holding power.
Ahsan Iqbal said that when people are struggling with inflation, unemployment and rising costs of basic necessities, simplicity, moderation and sensitivity to public sentiment become a moral responsibility for national leadership.
He emphasised that the dignity of leadership lies not in extravagance but in remaining connected with the circumstances of the people.
“Holding power was not about raising one’s standard of living, but about raising one’s standard of responsibility,” he said.
The minister prayed for the revival of traditions of simplicity, responsibility and public service among those in positions of authority.
