The government has decided to review the existing system for conferring civil awards and has constituted a 16-member committee to examine the nomination and selection procedures.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed Nasir Mahmood Khosa as convener of the committee, while the Cabinet Division formally notified its establishment.
The development comes after President Asif Ali Zardari approved several summaries submitted by the prime minister concerning military and civil awards.
The president approved military awards for 1,172 personnel of the armed forces and civil armed forces in recognition of their services.
He also approved national civil awards for 355 individuals for their contributions to science, engineering, education, medicine, arts, literature, sports, journalism, social welfare, philanthropy and public service.
The awards were announced on August 14 and will be formally conferred at an investiture ceremony on Pakistan Day, March 23.
