A premature baby has died after an eight-month pregnant woman was allegedly assaulted by her neighbours in Lahore’s Islampura area over a dispute involving the return of money from an informal savings scheme.
According to the complainant, he had visited his neighbours to collect the money when he and his wife were allegedly subjected to physical assault. He claimed that his pregnant wife was kicked in the abdomen during the incident.
The woman’s condition subsequently deteriorated, and she was taken to Ganga Ram Hospital, where doctors performed surgery to deliver the baby. The premature infant was placed in the nursery but later died.
The complainant has submitted an application to Islampura Police Station, seeking registration of a case against the alleged assailants.
Police said they were seeking a court order for a formal medical examination as part of the legal proceedings into the alleged assault and the infant’s death.
