The federal cabinet on Friday approved the draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment during a special session chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif via video link from Baku.
The meeting was attended by key ministers, including Khawaja Asif, Bilal Azhar Kayani, Rana Tanveer Hussain, Aurangzeb Khichi, Rana Mubashir, Aun Chaudhry, Dr. Shazra Mansab, Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, and Malik Rasheed Ahmed. Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan was also present at the Prime Minister’s Office.
Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar briefed the cabinet on the draft amendment and shared details of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) proposals.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Tarar announced that the amendment bill would be presented in the Senate today as part of the supplementary agenda. The draft, comprising 48 clauses, includes the establishment of a Constitutional Court — a longstanding proposal first introduced in the Charter of Democracy.
The bill also seeks to place the authority for judicial transfers under the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, addressing concerns recently raised regarding the transfer of judges.
According to sources, the PPP has endorsed three out of the government’s eight proposals, including those related to the command of the armed forces, the creation of constitutional courts, and the transfer of judges.
However, disagreements persist on key issues such as the NFC Award, appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner, judicial powers of executive magistrates, dual nationality of bureaucrats, and the transfer of certain ministries back to the federation.
