Army chief emerges as key player in US-Iran mediation

Field Marshal Asim Munir has emerged as a central figure in Pakistan’s efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran, playing a crucial behind-the-scenes role in attempts to ease regional tensions.

A video shared by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi showed Munir arriving in Tehran, where he was warmly received, signaling growing diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

According to officials, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has tasked the army chief with maintaining discreet contacts with both American and Iranian leadership to help de-escalate the situation and facilitate dialogue. Pakistan recently hosted rare face-to-face talks between US and Iranian delegations in Islamabad, keeping communication channels open despite the absence of a formal agreement.

Munir’s visit to Tehran is seen as part of efforts to pave the way for a second round of negotiations. Analysts suggest that while Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and the prime minister have taken a public-facing role, the army chief remains a decisive force behind the scenes.

Promoted to field marshal, Munir is regarded as one of the most powerful military figures in Pakistan’s history, with influence over both strategic and security matters. His previous roles include heading Military Intelligence and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Observers note that his engagement with global leaders, including US President Donald Trump, has strengthened Pakistan’s position as a potential mediator in regional conflicts.

Officials say Munir’s diplomatic outreach, including his recent Tehran visit, reflects Pakistan’s continued efforts to reduce tensions and promote dialogue in an increasingly volatile region.
