China backs Pakistan’s role in US-Iran talks

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong called on Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad on Tuesday, with discussions centring on the latest regional developments amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.

The ambassador conveyed China’s full support for Pakistan’s continued efforts to facilitate engagement between Washington and Tehran for sustained peace and stability in the region.

Deputy Prime Minister Dar reaffirmed the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership and underscored the importance of sustained high-level exchanges between the two countries.

The meeting came as China separately condemned the US naval blockade on Iranian ports, calling it dangerous and irresponsible. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said the increased US military deployments and targeted blockade action would only exacerbate tensions and undermine the already fragile ceasefire agreement.

He further warned that the move posed a direct threat to the safety of passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

The blockade came into force at 1400 GMT on April 13 following the failure of peace talks over the weekend, despite a two-week ceasefire having been agreed between Washington and Tehran days earlier. US President Donald Trump had ordered the blockade of ships entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas in the Gulf after the collapse of negotiations.
